What is NUAIR?

NUAIR is a New York-based non-profit that is defining, integrating, and enabling the future of traditional and uncrewed aviation, so commercial and government organizations can excel at what is Next. With practical guidance from inception to launch, and launch to expansion, NUAIR is navigating and defining complex regulations and drives concrete, repeatable results for success that scales. And at the center of a connected ecosystem in aviation technology, NUAIR is accelerating Advanced Air Mobility from theory to reality.

What does AAM stand for?

Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) is a rapidly-emerging, new sector of the aerospace industry which aims to safely and efficiently integrate highly automated aircraft into the national air space (NAS). AAM is not a single technology, but rather a collection of new and emerging technologies being applied to the aviation transportation system, particularly in new aircraft types.

Notional AAM use-cases include Urban Air Mobility (UAM), Regional Air Mobility (RAM), public services, large cargo delivery, and private or recreational vehicles. UAM and RAM are subsets of AAM activities occurring in urban environments.

What does s/UAS stand for?

Uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) include all items needed to conduct uncrewed aircraft operations: the uncrewed aircraft vehicle (UAV or drone), remote controller, camera, GPS, flight software and any other technology.

sUAS is the term for small uncrewed aircraft system – typically under 55lbs.

What does FIMS stand for?

Flight Information Management System (FIMS) is an interface for data exchange between FAA systems and Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Traffic Management (UTM) participants.

What does B/VLOS stand for?

Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) refers to uncrewed aircraft system (UAS) operations where the aircraft is out of the direct visual line of sight of the remote pilot. A BVLOS waiver is required for any person desiring to fly in this manner.

VLOS is Visual Line of Sight and refers to the line of sight of the Remote Pilot in Command (RPIC).

What does SWIM stand for?

System Wide Information Management (SWIM) provides a single point of access for near real-time, relevant, and reliable aeronautical, flight, weather, and surveillance information. It delivers the infrastructure, standards, and services needed to optimize the secure exchange of relevant data across the National Airspace System (NAS) and the aviation community. As the digital data-sharing backbone of NextGen, SWIM enables both operational excellence and innovation.
