Mike is the Chief Executive Officer of NUAIR. He has a leading role in the integration, synchronization, and execution of all activities and policy development for UAS operations aimed at developing a National UAS Traffic Management System. Mike leads the organizations strategy development process and the execution of supporting fiscal, business development, outreach, and communications plans enabling a targeted approach for growth and revenue generation. He is also instrumental in developing future budgets, fiscal forecasts, and grant proposal submissions to enable execution of operations and development in Central New York.
Prior to working at NUAIR, Mike spent 29 Years in the U.S. Army as a special operations aviator. He has over 20 years of command and leadership experience. His last role was as the Chief of Staff of the 82nd Airborne Division. Mike holds a Master’s Degree in National Security and Strategy from the U.S. Army War College, a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Murray State University, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Ithaca College. Mike volunteers on the Military Advisory Committee for Tuesdays Children as well as the Ithaca College School of Business Advisory Committee.
Ms. DeMarché has served as Chief Financial Officer in non-profit sector over the past several years. In her leadership roles, DeMarché has provided the organizations’ leadership and stakeholders the identifying factors that affect them in their respective non-profit spaces. DeMarché provides unbiased, financial information to leadership teams to aid in the data driven decision making process required for organizations to realize true performance potential. This is accomplished through DeMarché’s focus on financial and strategic management, including financial reporting, long-range business planning, and program/grant management.
Ms. DeMarché obtained her Bachelors of Science degree in Accounting from Syracuse University. Additionally, DeMarché holds her Certified Public Accountancy licensure from the State of New York. After obtaining her BS degree, Ms. DeMarché spent several years in public accounting, gaining exposure to assurance services, GAAP standards, research, tax preparation, etc. In later years, Ms. DeMarché focused on serving the non-profit industry, and specifically those organizations experiencing financial hardship. Through financial transparency, education, and strategic risk tasking, DeMarché was able to see the successful turnaround in these operations.
Tim Lawton is the Marketing Coordinator for NUAIR. He is the main contact for NUAIR marketing efforts including press releases, website updates, social media, graphic design, email campaigns and brand integrity.
Tim has a B.A. in Communication from the University at Buffalo and is a Part 107 certified pilot. He’s been working in the marketing realm since receiving his degree in 2010. His marketing experience spans a wide range of industries including banking, higher education, consulting and private enterprise. He is a highly data-driven marketing professional that carefully calculates each piece of a marketing campaign.

Colonel Anthony Basile is the Chief Operations Officer for the Northeast UAS Airspace Integration Research (NUAIR) Alliance.
A 1977 graduate of Fordham University, Bronx, NY, Colonel Basile is a resident of Manlius, NY. After completing undergraduate pilot training in 1981, he spent 29 years with the 174th Fighter Wing, Syracuse, NY, serving as its commander from 2003 until 2008. While at the 174th, Colonel Basile accumulated 4,000 hours flying the unit’s A-10 and F-16 aircraft. He has logged 67 combat sorties, including 51 during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. Among his numerous military awards are the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross with Valor, Meritorious Service Medal, and Air Medal with 4 devices.
From 2008 to until his retirement in 2010, Colonel Basile was assigned as Chief of Staff, New York Air National Guard (NYANG), headquartered in Latham, NY. In this position, he was the senior air officer responsible for the successful mission accomplishment of the NYANG: 5 flying wings and air defense sector totaling 6,000 airmen, 75 aircraft and 9 installations….5 billion dollars in resources, 450 million dollars in annual budgets. In this capacity, Colonel Basile served as the primary advisor to the Adjutant General, New York, in all matters dealing with the NYANG, both in execution of its federal mission supporting the global war on terrorism and federal disaster relief taskings, and its Defense Support to Civil Authority (DSCA) state mission responding to taskings from the Governor of New York State for domestic homeland security issues.
Colonel Basile was the Airport Service Group Manager for C&S Engineers, Inc., Syracuse, NY, from 2010 thru the end of 2013, overseeing the engineering planning, design, and construction of the firm’s 30 regional airport clients.
In addition to his work with NUAIR, he serves as President, Mach 2 Associates, LLC, consulting to a variety of clients on issues related to aviation, safety, crisis management, and media relations.
Andy Thurling is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for NUAIR, supporting the organization’s strategic efforts to establish protocols for the formal evaluation of UAS technologies and evaluate potential paths to commercialization. He works with partners from across the industry and academia to help establish technical standards for acceptance by regulators and develop testing criteria to verify compliance. Andy plays a critical role in the engineering and operations efforts needed to launch NUAIR’s national unmanned systems testing and rating (NUSTAR) initiative. His high-level of expertise and broad range experience in the industry supports NUAIR’s leadership role in the safe integration of UAS into the National Airspace System (NAS).
Thurling is active in standards bodies such as ASTM, the Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics (RTCA), and internationally with European Organization for Civil Aviation Equipment (EUROCAE). He is also a subject matter expert to the Joint Authorities for Rulemaking on Unmanned Systems (JARUS) working group developing the Specific Operational Risk Assessment process. He is a distinguished graduate of the United States Air Force Test Pilot School (USAF TPS) and has held several positions as a test pilot and instructor at USAF TPS.
Thurling graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and was commissioned in the Air Force in 1987. During the next decade, he served in various positions as an F-15 fighter pilot, before being selected for USAF TPS. His career in the Air Force culminated as commander of the Flight Test Squadron responsible for testing the nation’s newest unmanned aircraft. Thurling has over 2,300 hours of flight time in more than 35 aircraft types and was awarded the 2011 AUVSI “Operations Award” for leading the flight testing of the liquid hydrogen-powered Global Observer.
Andy served as the director of product safety and mission assurance at AeroVironment, in Simi Valley, California, leading airworthiness, certification and airspace access strategic efforts, prior to joining NUAIR.
Clark acts on behalf of NUAIR Chief Operations Officer as Operations Center supervisor during activities at the New York UAS Test Site at Griffiss Airport. He monitors the air picture and displays to contribute to flight safety and mission accomplishment. Participates in the on-going development of the operations center displays focusing on the integration of dissimilar sensors to provide a common air picture. Provides a human factors perspective evaluating the quality and usability of sensor data.
Clark has 30 years of experience as a USAF/NY Air National Guard (ANG) Air Battle Manager (ABM) in ground and airborne operations. He served at virtually every level of NORAD operations from a remote long-range radar, to sector/air division operations, NORAD Cheyenne Mt Complex operations and HQ staff, and as well as a USAF-CF Exchange Officer. As an E-3 AWACS Flight Commander/Mission Crew Commander he flew over 2,000 hours with over 250 hours during Desert Storm combat operations. After 16 years on active duty USAF, he transferred to active duty with the NYANG at the Northeast Air Defense Sector (NEADS) and served in every key leadership position. From 2005-08 he served as NEADS Commander retiring in 2008.
After his 30-year USAF career Clark worked for several years as Division Manager/Customer Advocate at Alion Science and Technology in Rome, NY and later as a Business Development Manager for Lockheed Martin ground based radar systems in Liverpool, NY.
Clark is a graduate of Wilkes University with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a graduate from Webster’s University with a master’s degree in Purchasing and Materials Management.
David manages the engagement teams at NUAIR, responsible for customer engagement, sales, marketing, consulting and business development.
He has a B.S. in Business Management and Economics from Empire State College and has been in sales and marketing for over 10 years. The majority of his experience is in complex enterprise resource planning software sales and running his own company selling office supplies to smaller businesses. His technical experience comes from the automotive industry where he was a quality engineer at Magna Powertrain.

Elise Hereth joined the USAF in 1985 as a 2nd Lieutenant and served on Active Duty and then in the NY Air National Guard until her retirement as a Colonel (O-6) in 2014. Her career started as an Air Weapons Controller and then Air Battle Manager, as the career field developed. She operated predominately in ground environments including Forward Air Control Posts in mobile tactical units and in static locations in a variety of missions, including air defense.
Col Hereth was a Flight Commander at the Northeast Air Defense Sector during 9/11, and then the Sector Operations Control Center Director during the spiral development of their Battle Control System-Fixed used for air defense of the U.S and Canada as part of North American Aerospace Defense Command. This entailed the testing and reporting on new systems which combined many new sensors into a consolidated air picture, and the ability to communicate and coordinate with dozens of collaborating agencies.
She also served as Operations Training Officer, Chief of Standardization & Evaluations, Assistant Operations Director, and then culminated her career as the Support Commander and a Battle Commander for the Eastern Air Defense Sector in Rome, NY. Elise holds a Bachelor of Science, Earth Science (Geology) University of Florida, Air Command and Staff College, Air War College.
Chuck provides management and technical oversight of the NUAIR UAS pilot team. In addition to maintaining all qualifications as a UAS pilot, Chuck is responsible for ensuring all flight proficiency requirements are met, and is the primary evaluator for the team. Chuck’s decades of aviation and IT experience allow him to serve NUAIR in this capacity.
Chuck has almost 30 years as an Information Technology (IT) consultant for small and medium sized businesses in the Central NY area, focusing on network infrastructure and IT management concerns.
He holds a Commercial pilot certificate with Airplane Single Engine, Multi-Engine, and Instrument ratings and is a current and active certified flight instructor with over 3,000 hours in light aircraft logged. Volunteers for Civil Air Patrol (CAP) as a Mission Pilot, Instructor pilot and pilot examiner. Participates in several special project missions such as MQ9-chase operations.
Chuck is a graduate of the University of the State of NY with a BS degree in Business Management and served eight years active duty Air Force.
